David was in the Loyal Rangers under Colonel Robert Rogers at New York. He was granted a total of 600 acres in Elizabethtown Township, Leeds County, Ontario, Canada: 200 acres at Conc 7 Lot 20; 200 acres at Conc 10 Lot 1; 100 acres at Conc 7 Lot 6E; and 100 acres at Conc 1 Lot 31W. He received the Patent for each of the 200 acre lots in 1803, but the Patents for the other 100 acre lots were given to other people - C7 L6S went to David's son, Moses in 1835, and C1 L31 went to Adam Cole in 1804.

The Loyal Rangers were created on November 12, 1781 from a number of smaller military units including the Loyal Americans. They were led by Edward Jessup. They were usually stationed at Sorel or Verchères and provided garrisons for posts at Yamaska, Rivière-aux-Chiens, Île aux Noix, and Dutchman's Point (near Alburg, Vermont).

The rangers were disbanded on December 24,1783.

After the war, Jessup's Rangers were allotted townships number 6 (Edwardsburg), number 7 (Augusta), and part of number 8 (Elizabethtown), all on the St Lawrence, as well as No 2 (Ernestown), west of Cataraqui (Kingston).
