  From L Hill - Arthur and Marcella met in nursing school. Cleveland philanthropist Samuel Mather knew Arthur from church. He planned to open a series of shelters providing services to the poor, including medical. Mather wanted Arthur to be in charge of the medical care, so he sent Arthur to nursing school so he would be better qualified. Unfortunately, Mather's plan never took off, and Arthur returned to sailing the Great Lakes.
