Notes - WW1 Service - #3231519; 2nd Depot Battalion, 1st Central Ontario Regiment; Military Service Act 870739. Enlisted 25 Jan 1918; Discharged 4 Jul 1919 demobilization.
Per Mary (McLean) Allen - Elsley spent most of young life trapping. He joined the army - in the Infantry. He went overseas and was wounded in France in 1918 in a battle accident. The solder opposite Elsley in the slit trench was cleaning his revolver and it went off and hit Elsley in the elbow. Elsley was sent home and discharged. While he was in France, he received $1.00/day regular away pay and 10 cents extra for active duty. (Harvey Allen has the army pay book - 1993.)
After coming home, Elsley went to Hearst trapping and cutting pulpwood in the same area as Cyrus Allen, Russell Beemer and Jack Humphries until the big fire that almost killed Cyrus and his family.
Elsley returned to Sault Ste Marie and worked on the Sault Locks, becoming the man who swung the gates to let the boats through for 35 years. He retired Dec 1, 1958 and died Jan 3, 1959.
