Notes - William was 9 years old - the 2nd youngest child of 6 - when his parents arrived in Canada in the summer of 1847. They were coming to join some of his mother's family (Morrison) in Toronto Gore. His father died within 14 days of their arrival in Canada and is buried at St Mary's Cemetery in Tullamore, Chingacousy Twp where many other Morrisons rest. The family stayed in the Toronto Gore area until about 1850 when they moved to Arthur Township in Wellington County, Ontario.
In 1864 William received the patent for 100 acres - the N 1/2 of Lot 22, Conc 11, Wagram, Arthur Twp. In 1868 he took out a mortgage of $400. Several mortgages were taken out over the years until 1879 when they were all paid. In March 1881 another mortgage for $1800 was taken out (perhaps to make the move to Algoma) and in April 1881 the property was sold to Wm L Morrison and Matthew Morrison. The March mortgage was paid in May 1881.
William came to Algoma where he purchased from the Crown 160 acres @ $.20 per acre, for a total of $32.00: "The North half of Lot Number Five in this First Concession in said Township of Gladstone." [as per Pioneer Deed].
William initially built a log house situated, (in 1993) where the Iron Bridge Seventh Day Adventist Church stands. This house was beside an Indian trail that wound from the Mississaugi River - "The Landing" - at the boundary of Gladstone and Bright Additional Townships, up past Warnock (Round) Lake and Clear Lake, to Big Basswood (Wakiwakobi) Lake. Indians used to stop at the William Allen homestead for their lunch and called it their "half-way" house. This house burned in 1905.
Methodists gathered at the Allen home for regular church services for several years until the first school was built in 1883. The land for this school was given by William and Rebecca Allen.
William Allen and his wife Rebecca had 13 children and, when their daughter Rebecca Jane died in childbirth in 1903, they raised a granddaughter (Jane/Jenny Beemer) until she was about 12.
