Notes - Matthew and Zina married in Sault Ste Marie in 1896. Initially, they farmed in Cloudslee, Lefroy Twp, Algoma, Ontario where, in 1889, Matthew was recognized for his prize-winning timothy hay - it measured 6'4". Excerpt from Shantymen & Sodbusters - Pg 68 - by J. E. MacDonald - "There was keen rivalry among the settlers that year to see who could produce the finest specimen of grain. ... the farmers of Lefroy Township, west of Kirkwood, also brought in prize specimens; among them Matt Brandon, who produced a sample of timothy hay measuring six feet, four inches."
- c1918 the family moved into the village of Thessalon; and in 1924, they bought a home on Lot D, Huron Street, Thessalon from John A Kinch.
- From book "This Point of Land" (J. E. MacDonald) - Page 134 - when speaking of the power plants at Thessalon and Little Rapids - "Two old timers in Algoma, Archie Coyne and Matt Brandon tended the plant at Little Rapids during the 1930's. Their parents had come to Algoma about 1880, and were among the earliest settlers in Rose and Lefroy Townships."
