5476 William was 9 years old - the 2nd youngest child of 6 - when his parents arrived in Canada in the summer of 1847. They were coming to join some of his mother's family (Morrison) in Toronto Gore. His father died within 14 days of their arrival in Canada and is buried at St Mary's Cemetery in Tullamore, Chingacousy Twp where many other Morrisons rest. The family stayed in the Toronto Gore area until about 1850 when they moved to Arthur Township in Wellington County, Ontario.

In 1864 William received the patent for 100 acres - the N 1/2 of Lot 22, Conc 11, Wagram, Arthur Twp. In 1868 he took out a mortgage of $400. Several mortgages were taken out over the years until 1879 when they were all paid. In March 1881 another mortgage for $1800 was taken out (perhaps to make the move to Algoma) and in April 1881 the property was sold to Wm L Morrison and Matthew Morrison. The March mortgage was paid in May 1881.

William came to Algoma where he purchased from the Crown 160 acres @ $.20 per acre, for a total of $32.00: "The North half of Lot Number Five in this First Concession in said Township of Gladstone." [as per Pioneer Deed].

William initially built a log house situated, (in 1993) where the Iron Bridge Seventh Day Adventist Church stands. This house was beside an Indian trail that wound from the Mississaugi River - "The Landing" - at the boundary of Gladstone and Bright Additional Townships, up past Warnock (Round) Lake and Clear Lake, to Big Basswood (Wakiwakobi) Lake. Indians used to stop at the William Allen homestead for their lunch and called it their "half-way" house. This house burned in 1905.

Methodists gathered at the Allen home for regular church services for several years until the first school was built in 1883. The land for this school was given by William and Rebecca Allen.

William Allen and his wife Rebecca had 13 children and, when their daughter Rebecca Jane died in childbirth in 1903, they raised a granddaughter (Jane/Jenny Beemer) until she was about 12.

Per Mary (McLean) Allen - As a teenager, Ephraim helped his brother Herb plow new land with a team of oxen on Herb's farm (later Nelson's) in Gladstone Township.

When he was 17, he worked on the new highway, spreading gravel with 'old man Williams' (Waller Nicholson's maternal great-grandfather). Mr Williams was a veteran. Ephraim told of them working hard to get the gravel spread, because Mr Williams liked to have time to do "bayonet practice" with the shovel handles. Ephraim said he went home with sore ribs where he'd been poked.

He started working for the C.P.R. where he became a "wireless operator". He joined the army and went overseas during WWI with the Signal Corps. While in Germany, he got the "flu" during the European epidemic. He and 2 others were billeted in an old German lady's home. When there was room in the hospital, they came to move them and Ephraim said he'd take his chances staying with the German lady who was nursing them. The other 2 went to the hospital and they both died.

When Ephraim returned from overseas, he went back to the C.P.R. and later became Station Agent of the main line of C.P.R. at Missanabi, Franz and Lochalik [sp?]. He met and married Alice Fletcher, a Cree Indian. Their first child died as a baby and they later had a son, Glenn.

Ephraim became Station Agent at Levack and Desbarats. He retired after 33 years with C.P.R. and received a commendation from the President for working 33 years and never missing a day's work.

Per Mary (McLean) Allen - Elsley spent most of young life trapping. He joined the army - in the Infantry. He went overseas and was wounded in France in 1918 in a battle accident. The solder opposite Elsley in the slit trench was cleaning his revolver and it went off and hit Elsley in the elbow. Elsley was sent home and discharged. While he was in France, he received $1.00/day regular away pay and 10 cents extra for active duty. (Harvey Allen has the army pay book - 1993.)

After coming home, Elsley went to Hearst trapping and cutting pulpwood in the same area as Cyrus Allen, Russell Beemer and Jack Humphries until the big fire that almost killed Cyrus and his family.

Elsley returned to Sault Ste Marie and worked on the Sault Locks, becoming the man who swung the gates to let the boats through for 35 years. He retired Dec 1, 1958 and died Jan 3, 1959.
