| 4901 | Obituary - The Advertiser, Owen Sound - Died: Death of Mrs. B. Allen: It is our painful duty this week to announce the death of Mary Crothers, wife of our esteemed and well-known citizen, B. Allen, Esq. She was taken ill on the night of the 11 of January, first with a chill, followed with a slight attack of pleurisy. This continued until the Tuesday night following, when acute pneumonia set in, first in the left lung, and finally spreading to the right lung. In spite of the best medical treatment she became worse, and died on Thursday evening about half -past seven. Mrs. Allen was sixty-two years of age. She was born in Bainbridge, County Down, Ireland, in 1832, and came to Canada with friends in 1851, settling in Toronto, and was married to Mr. Allen at that city in January 1857, coming to Owen Sound the following fall, when Mr. Allen started a general store. The fruit of the marriage was four children, two sons and two daughters, of which three are living. Jennie the eldest daughter died some nine years ago. Mrs. Allen was a member of the Methodist Church. Funeral services were held at the residence at 2 o'clock on Saturday, conducted by Rev. M. Hincks and Rev. Dr. Somerville, after which the remains were taken to Greenwood Cemetery for interment, followed by a large concourse of sympathizing friends. William, the eldest son, has been residing in Chicago for the last eight years. He was wired on Wednesday evening and informed of his mother's illness, and arrived here on Saturday by the five o'clock G. T. R., too late for the funeral. | CROTHERS, Mary (I17645)

Born Sept. 4, 1901, in Canada, she died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at Alden Healthcare, Naperville. Interment will be private. Mrs. Burnside was a lifelong resident of the Lisle-Naperville area. She is survived by her daughters, Helen (Raymond) Flynn of Lombard and Shirley (Charles) Ferreri of Naperville; sons, Curtis Burnside of Aurora, Roger Burnside of Naperville and Robert (Jan) Burnside of Denver Colo.; seven grandchildren; and 15 great- grandchildren. | 4903 | Obituary - The death occurred early yesterday morning at the residence of his son, Upper Macedon, of Mr Richard Allen, head of Richard Allen and Sons (1919) Pty Ltd, soft goods merchants, of Flinders lane. Mr Allen, who would have celebrated his 87th birthday next month, was born in County Sligo, Ireland. He served his apprenticeship in the soft goods business with the firm of Joseph Lyons, of Sligo. He came to Australia at an early age, and, after having gained colonial experience, he returned to Ireland and obtained several agencies, some of which his firm still retains. Upon his return to Australia, 49 years ago, he began business in Bourke Street as a general agent. Later Mr Allen accepted a position as traveller to the firm of McArthur, Sherrard and Copland, after which he became manager for Sargood, Son, and Company. He established his own business in Flinders lane in 1880. As head of the business he spent 64 years of his life in Flinders lane. He took a keen interest in his work until a few weeks before his death. His two sons, Messrs S. A. and H. G. Allen, are co-directors of the firm. For many years Mr Allen was a director of the Eagle Star, and British Dominions Insurance Company. Mr Allen was a supporter of the Young Men’s Christian Association, and he was largely instrumental in raising the money for the new building. He was elected to the City Council as a representative of the Latrobe Ward in 1907, and he remained on the council until 1922, when he resigned because of advancing years. His hobby was archery, and his club met regularly at his private residence, Kooyong, Gladstone parade, Elsternwick. Mr Allen married a daughter of the Rev. A. K. Henderson, a former minister of the Collins Street Congregational Church. He had been a widower for many years. His daughter is Mrs. C. Smibert. | 4906 | Obituary 13 March 1891 The Bolton Enterprise James Duffy of Albion, Lot 11 in the 5th Concession, died on Sunday morning last, 5th day of March after a lingering illness of a year or more. The deceased was born in the County of Sligo in 1813 and came to Canada in 1832, settling upon the old homestead. He subsequently married a daughter of Mr Walker's of the Township of York, Yeoman, and she predeceased him some four years ago. The deceased was a staunch conservative and adherent of the Methodist Church. H ewas an active member of L.O.L., No 146, Albion, formerly called the Armstrong Lodge. The many excellent traits in the character of the deceased caused him to be very highly respected wherever he was known, and his death caused universal sorrow. The funeral was largely attended and the Rev Walker of Mono Road preached the funeral sermon at St Paul;s Church, Bolton. Six sons of the deceased were the pallbearers. | DUFFY, James (I6502)

| 4907 | Obituary 18 March 1948 - name of paper torn off The funeral of a member of one of this districts families, Dr Alex H Allen, who died in Toronto on Wednesday after a short illness was held at Paisley on Saturday with interment in Stark Vale Cemetery. Relatives and old friends were in attendance. Dr Allen was the second oldest son of Alexander (Sandy) Allen and his wife, Ann Thompson, and was born at Riverstown in 1861. He attended school there and in Mount Forest taught for a number of years at the Tollgate School and then took a course at the Dental College, Toronto. He practiced his profession for many years at Paisley and Peterborough and for the last few years in Toronto. He was probably the oldest practicing dentist in Ontario. Throughout his life Dr Allen took a keen interest in political questions and public matters and was a strong champion of temperance movements. He was always happy to return on occasional visits to his home town and to meet and talk with old friends. He was one of the happiest Old Boys at last year's Reunion and took particular pleasure in the Bowling games. He was twice married. His first wife was Margaret Cheves, Clifford, who attended model school in Mount Forest. Her death took place seven years ago. He later married Margaret Kennedy who survives. Of a family of nine, two brothers, J.T. Allen and Charles Allen of Florida, and two sisters, Mrs Alfred Hutchinson, Mt Forest and Mrs A.G. Hill of Cleveland, Ohio survive. | 4908 | OBITUARY FOR FRANK PRESTON: THESSALON, Sept 7 - The death occurred at Thessalon after a lingering illness, Friday, August 23, of Frank Preston. Frank was born October 11, 1896 at Napinka, Manitoba, and came to Algoma with his parents in 1897 and resided in Thessalon till the time of his death. He was married to Mabel Vera Brandon in 1921. Besides his wife, he is survived by 3 daughters - Mabel (Mrs. G Allen), of Sault Ste Marie, Frances and Geraldine and a foster daughter Margaret Harriet, at home; 2 sisters, Mrs Herbert Spencer and Calista of Benton Harbor [MI]; 1 brother, Herbert of Buffalo. As a young man Frank drove the local bus for John Jackson, whereby his never failing good humour and readiness to serve one and all, he won a host of friends, among the travelling public as well as at home. | 4910 | Obituary for Robert Roy Dewbury - Bob was born in Dauphin, Manitoba on November 18, 1944, to parents Charlie and Beatrice Dewbury. He was an only child until his sister Marilyn was born 13 years later. He told the story of when he was only two years old. His mother had the sense to gather from him from the crib moments before a tornado took the roof of their sod home and crushed his crib. He grew up on the farm in Sifton, MB. His family farm consisted of raising a herd of purebred Herford cattle, horses, pigs, roosters, and chickens. He spent time as a young boy caring for the animals. His favorite horse was named Fly. Bob attended a one room schoolhouse. He would finish his own work early and then work on the assignments for the grade above. He enjoyed telling the story that he skipped a grade in school and graduated High School at the young age of 16. He moved to Winnipeg at 16 to attend Winnipeg Bible College. It was there that he made many lifelong friends. He completed a BA in Theology. He then went on to study at Dallas Theological Seminary. He started dating Gail the love of his life who became his life partner in 1968. In the early years of their marriage Bob was pastor at a church in Winnipeg. He also taught at Winnipeg Bible College. They eventually returned to Dallas Theological Seminary with their two oldest children (Becky and Bobby) to complete his Master of Theology. After graduation Bob and his family moved to Tisdale, SK to pastor a church. Their third child (Ben) arrived while pastoring in Tisdale. He continued his ministry in Black Diamond, Whitecourt, Edmonton, and Fort Saskatchewan, AB. Many youth that crossed paths with him throughout his life considered him a mentor. After retirement, Bob and Gail returned to Manitoba to live in Winnipeg. In retirement Bob continued to do what he loved to do all his life, teaching those around him. He taught English as a second language with international students. He taught small group Bible studies. He even enjoyed teaching people how to drive. Bob loved his family. His face would light up when he could visit his family in person or on facetime. He wanted to hear what and how his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were doing. He was so proud of them all and would pass on their accomplishments to family and friends. In the last few years of Gail's life Bob was her main caregiver. He was so kind and patient with Gail as they faced the struggles of ALS and MS together. He amazed his family and friends as he stepped into the role of caregiver, housekeeper, cook, grocery shopper, and feeder. His final words were "I want to be with Gail." At the end of his life, Bob made sure that all of his family knew that he loved them. He was ready to go and finished well, the way he lived. Bob was predeceased by his parents, his parents-in-law Perry and Millie Foster and his beloved wife Gail Dewbury. She was the beloved wife of the late Ralph Bertram Allen (1981). Mable is survived by her sister-in-law Ruby Kirkpatrick and was predeceased by her brothers George, Elwin, Edgar and Fred Kirkpatrick and her sisters Violet Elliot and Gladys Sim. She was also predeceased by her brothers-in-law Harry and Morrison "Mott" Allen. After training as a hairdresser Mable went on to a wonderful career in the world of beauty that included owning the Diane Beauty Salon in Mount Forest for decades. After living in Farewell for many years, Mable and Ralph moved to Mount Forest in retirement and she continued to provide hair styling from their home. She was a committed member of the United Church and the U.C.W. Her many nieces and nephews (and the great, great-great and great-great-great ones also) gave her a special place in their heart and will miss her zest for life and quick wit. Special recognition goes to the staff at Caressant Care who provided boundless compassion and support. | 4914 | Obituary from Paisley Advocate 23 March 1948 The remains of Dr. A.H. Allen whose death occurred in Toronto, were laid to rest in the family plot in Stark Vale Cemetery. Service at the graveside was conducted by Rev. H.C. Linstead of Knox United Church of which congregation Dr Allen had been a prominent member during his residence here. The pallbearers were: J.A. Logle, I. Shoemaker, Ross McArthur, J. Ross Laidlaw, W.T. Hopper and R. Geo. Grant. Dr. Allen was born in Mount Forest. Prior to entering Toronto university to take up the course in dental surgery, he had taught school for a few years. In 1837 Dr Allen located in Paisley remaining for 32 years before removing to Peterborough in 1919. For the past few years he has been in Toronto, and attended patients in his office until about two weeks ago, when he was taken ill with a heavy cold. He was in his 87th year, and was perhaps the oldest practicing dentist in the Province. An enthusiastic exponent of the game of lacrosse in his youth, he soon organized a club here, and eventually the team under his captainship won the district championship. In later years his recreation was lawn bowling. As a member of Knox Church he was a leader in Sunday School and young people's work. He was also a strong supporter of temperance legislation. Lambert, formerly of the Representative, Mount Forest, died Tuesday afternoon in the Wellesley Hospital in his sixty-second year. Mr. Lambert has been in failing health for the past six months, but was not seriously ill until a month ago. His wife died a year ago this month, since which time Mr. Lambert lived at the Central Y.M.C.A. at Toronto. He is survived by two sons, Norman P., formerly of the Globe and now Secretary of the Canadian Council of Agriculture, Winnipeg, and Elmer F., General Secretary of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, Toronto. Mr. Lambert was born in Cherry Valley, Prince Edward County, and his mother still lives there, in her ninety-first year. He learned the printing business at Picton, and later worked in Mount Forest and Prescott, and then was for a time foreman of THE ACTON FREE PRESS. He went to Mount Forest from this office about the year 1885, and founded The Mount Forest Representative which he conducted successfully until he retired after Mrs. Lambert's death. Mr. Lambert was a member of the Council a number of times in Mount Forest and was actively identified with the Methodist Church. He was a prominent Conservative and was President of the Conservative Association at that place for a number of years. He also belonged to the Oddfellows. In his younger days he was a lacrosse player and later took up bowling. James A. Lambert was a man of sterling integrity. | 4921 | OBITUARY: An Aged Arthur Pioneer - On Sunday there died at his residence, Farewell, John Allen, one of that old and esteemed band that are gradually passing away, the early settlers. Deceased was born in Sligo, Ireland 88 years ago. About 1845 he came to Canada. For a number of years he lived at Dundas. Then nearly sixty years ago, he came to the Queen's Bush, settling on the ninth of Arthur. He was a successful farmer and by integrity, thrift and industry, achieved a competence. For the past ten years he has lived at Farewell. He took a keen interest in public affairs, for many years he was assessor and collector of the township, and was afterwards a member of the township council for several years. He was an Episcopalian in religion and a conservative in politics. He was a man of simple tastes and temperate, regular habits, who never used tobacco and seldom touched liquor, and then most sparingly. His manner of life was conducive to the number of days which he enjoyed. He was ill for only five weeks, death being due to a gradual weakening of the heart from old age. He was twice married. His first wife died 18 years ago, the second survives as do also four sons: W. C., John D., and David of the ninth of Arthur, and Dr G. P. Allen of Mt Forest and one daughter, Mrs Irwin Morrison, of Arthur Tp. He has two brothers, George of Rothsay and Alexander of Mt Forest, aged 80 and 82 respectively, making the combined ages of the 3 brothers just 250 years. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon to Riverstown Cemetery and was largely attended. He did not suffer from any particular ailment, but was confined to his bed due to a gradual weakening of the system. Deceased had almost reached the great age of 98 years. He was born in County Sligo, Ireland, on June 10, 1830. When a young man he came to Canada and for a short time worked with his brother [John] in Dundas; then for ten years he was associated in the shoe business with his brother Alexander at Riverstown. Marrying Miss Eliza Thompson, sister of Mrs. Alex Allen 62 years ago, he moved to Rothsay where he spent his remaining years, at first in the boot and shoe business and later for a number of years as a flour and feed merchant. A few years ago, he retired from business, but remained active, working in his garden last summer. Mr. Allen was widely known and much esteemed for his hospitality and honesty as a citizen. His home was headquarters of dignitaries of the Anglican Church. He was a member of the Orange Order. There is a record of his being Master of the Farewell Lodge when he went to Rothsay, and being a great pedestrian, he would walk from Rothsay to Farewell to attend Lodge. He is survived by his widow, three daughters, Misses Mary and Helen at home; and Mrs. Thomas Caldwell (Hattie) of Holdfast, Sask; and two sons, James of Aylesbury, Sask; and George A of Niagara Falls, N. Y. Another son, John, predeceased him in Regina. On Sunday there were throngs of visitors to pay their last respects from Guelph, Toronto, Hamilton, Southampton, Stratford and nearer places. The funeral on Monday was also very largely attended, and took place from St James Church, Rothsay, to the Mount Forest Cemetery. Rev. Mr. Wilkins of Rothsay conducted the services. The pall-bearers were six nephews: Dr. G. P. Allen, and Messrs. G L Allen, W C Allen, David Allen and Hugh and Geo. Thompson; also John W Allen (honorary pall-bearer). Harper. He appears as well as usual on Sundy morning and went to the stable to attend his horse. His daughter, thinking he was a long time out, went in search, and was shocked to find her father lying dead in the stable. Death was due to heart failure.
