| 4881 | Obituary - "Christian Guardian", Toronto, 10 Oct 1877 - Henry Brett The subject of this notice was born in the County of Sligo, Ireland, in the year 1791, and departed this life March 1877. At an early age he was brought under the influence of Wesleyan Methodism, and when the hymn was being given out, commencing "While quiet in my house I sit" the Spirit carried conviction to his heart. He was led to class meeting by two of his sisters, and through their example and prayer, he was enabled by faith to rest on Christ for salvation. At the age of seventeen he united with the Wesleyan Methodist Church, of which he remained a member until the day of his death. In the year 1850 he and his family emigrated to Canada, and settled in the Township of Mono near Rosemont. He joined the church at what was called Thompson's appointment. Afterwards he moved to Tossorontio, but still retained his connection with the church. Getting well stricken in years he retired from farming and went to live with his son-in-law, Brother John Dixon, an esteemed local preacher at Lavender on the Hornings Mills Mission. Here he received all the kindness and care that could be bestowed on him by a daughter and loving grandchildren until the last battle was fought and the last victory claimed. A few Sundays before his decease, his experience in class was marked by a more than ordinary depth and richness. He glories in his unclouded prospect for home. On the 20th of March when asked how he felt, he said, "I am weak in body and will not be long here; but I feel the promises sustain me." I don't think I have ever witnessed a more peaceful and happy Christian. Though eight-six years of age he could read fine print without the aid of glasses. His end was certainly one of great peace; only a fulfillment of the old saying, "Our people die well." | 4882 | Obituary - 13 April 1911 - The late Mr. Thomas Polk Willsallen passed away full of years at his Sydney residence, Uig Lodge, Point Piper, at the ripe age of seventy-six years on the 8th March last. He came out to Australia seventy-two years ago with his mother and step-father, having been born at Ballina, Ireland, and his first experience of pastoral life was gained forty years ago, when he went into partnership with his step-brother, the late Mr. E. G. Higgins, of Kickerbell, Quirindi, who died a few months ago. Mr. Willsallen was certainly one of the pioneers of the Liverpool Plains, where he first settled some forty years ago on Gunnible Station, about four miles out of Gunnedah. Later on he acquired Rangari Station, about twenty miles from Gunnible, and Toolebuc Station in the Winton district, Northern Queensland. He also at one time owned Kercargo Station, in the Walgett district, and Mundowey and Cuerindi Stations, in the Manilla district, but these he sold some years before his death. He leaves a widow and three sons (Messrs. Edwin Herbert, T. L., and P. S. Willsallen) and two daughters (Mrs. J. M. Antill and Miss Daisy Willsallen). All his sons are interested in pastoral pursuits. Mr. Willsallen always took a keen interest in the growth and welfare of Gunnedah and district, and was generally noted for his generous disposition and gifts to all charitable institutions. He was for many years (until ill-health compelled him to retire from all active pursuits, and live at his Sydney residence) president of the P.A. and H. Society, Gunnedah, and the Gunnedah Hospital, for which latter institution he built a fine brick women's ward, now known as the Willsallen ward. His remains were conveyed to Gunnedah, and interred in the family vault there, and the cortege at the funeral was a lengthy one and fully representative of the district. The deceased gentleman had been ailing for the last two years, and the end was not unexpected. | 4883 | Obituary - a Mount Forest newspaper A member of a pioneer family of Arthur Township and Mount Forest, Rube Allen Sr died in Florida on October 20th. The following obituary was taken from a Florida paper and received by Mrs Alf Hutchinson, a sister. He was born at Riverstown, a son of Mr and Mrs Alex Allen, 81 years ago. Mr Allyn founded the Sarasota Sun and the Florida Fisherman. He was a colourful figure in the newspaper and outdoor fields, but had lived for the past few years in retirement at Ruskin. He was the father of Rube Allyn, fishing editor of the St Petersburg Times and of G Wayne Allyn, of the Times composing room. To daughters and his wife also survive. Well known in politics in the 1920s, he began his career as a tramp printer, working all over the United States. He graduated from a school of dramatics and oratory in Philadelphia and travelled for a year as a humorist on the Chautauqua circuit, appearing on the same platform with James Whitcomb Riley and Bill Nye. He tried his hand in dramatic roles on the vaudeville stage in New York city for about a year and finally came to Florida in 1906, settling in Sarasota. In 1913, he founded the Sarasota Sun but discontinued the publication of the weekly to take a position in the Hog Island shipyards, Philadelphia, during World War 1. He later represented the employees there in Congress. Returning to Florida he bought a newspaper plant and began publication of the Florida Fisherman, in which he advocated the conservation of Wild Life. He was active in the Isaac Walton league. Mr Allyn built a home in the Big Bayou section of St Petersburg, but of recent years lived in retirement in Ruskin Inlet. Nora and her granddaughter Bonnie Strom (late Chuck Mummery) held a very special bond. Predeceased by her three sons Ellis Allan (late Emily), Glenn Allan (late Marilyn) and Harold Allan (Louise). Sister of Ethel Marshall (late Art) and Bertha Barill (late Bob). Sister-in-law of Dorothy Allan (late Wilbur). Predeceased by her brothers and sisters Russell Lamming (late Mabel), Ellen Hill (late Clarence), Violet Marshall (late Gordon), Leon Lamming (late Jessie), Della Sheply (late Charles), Frank Lamming (late Anna), Bill Lamming (Fanelda), Ena Marshall (late Bert) and Stan Lamming (late Marion). She will also be missed by her many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was very happy that her grandchildren from out of town, Kathy and Dave Finnessy, Gordon and Kelly Allan and Jane Rawson with their children, came to visit her in her home earlier this month. Bonney of Mattapoisett. A proud Canadian born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the daughter of the late Fred and Gertrude (Allen) Cook, she raised her children in the Farmington Valley area of Connecticut and resided in Portsmouth, RI for the last 10 years. As a young woman, she was a talented swimmer, diver and skater. She had a pioneer spirit and lived in the Colorado Mountains for 8 years after raising her 5 children. Mrs. Bonney was an accomplished singer who sang in various choirs, shows and in the Swanhurst Choir in Rhode Island. She was a registered nurse for numerous years before raising her children. Survivors include her former husband; three sons, David Bonney of Newington, CT, George Bonney of Portsmouth, RI and Douglas Bonney, and his wife Kathy, of Franklin, MA; a daughter, Ann Whiting, and her husband Dale, of Mattapoisett; a daughter-in-law, Yvonne of Scarborough, ME; three grandchildren, Craig Whiting, Kara Whiting and Mitchell Bonney; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Geoffrey Bonney and the sister of the late Allen Cook, Jack Cook and Margaret Watts. The deceased had been complaining for some time previously of a slight illness, but as he was not confined to his bed it was not considered at all serious. He retired as usual on Friday night, and was apparently well the next morning, but towards noon he was seized, it is thought, by a stroke of partial paralysis, and in a few moments expired. She was born in Dauphin, Manitoba in 1945 to parents, Perry and Millie Foster. She married Bob Dewbury in 1968. She graduated from the U of A, with a BSC in Nursing, with distinction, and served as a public health nurse and pastor's wife. She is survived by her husband, three children and spouses, nine grandchildren, three foster-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and eight siblings. Funeral will take place 11:00 a.m., November 19 at Waverley Baptist Church, 2171 Waverley Street. Born at home in a small farming community, Alma Heights, near Thessalon, Ontario, she was the middle child of Mildred and Stirling Proud. She was predeceased by her brothers Ken and Dale Proud. She will forever be remembered as the loving mother of Susan Murdoch (Ken) and Sherry Smith (Rick). Iris was a doting grandmother and will be sorely missed by Bryan and Jeff (Hollie) Murdoch, Carly Smith, Kristi (Peter) MacDonald and Lainie Smith (Ben). Great grandchildren Scout (Lemieux), Edie Iris (MacDonald), Paisley and Brynnley (Murdoch) who are too young to understand how much they were loved by a woman who treasured family. Iris was the cherished and adored wife of Willard Bandy for 60 years. In retirement, they enjoyed travel, winters in Florida, curling, playing bridge and golf. Iris volunteered, made endless egg salad sandwiches for church functions and tended to their beautiful home and garden. Iris was encouraged to train as a teacher and will be fondly remembered by those whose hearts and minds she touched. A teacher never really knows how far their influence extends. Her kindness, humour and love will never be forgotten. Mom made us realize our self-worth and made us feel important and worthy of her unconditional love. We never, for a moment, felt otherwise. Mom loved fashion, always had perfect hair and kept an immaculately clean house. She and Dad had wonderful friends, enjoyed parties and many "happy hours". They loved to dance and were very skilled! It was a privilege, a joy and a blessing to have Iris as our Mom. We are close as a family because of her. Her Legacy will live on in each of her grandchildren. We would like to thank the entire staff of Granite Ridge Retirement Residence for the compassionate care shown to Mom. ROBERT NELLES, THESSALON - A host of friends in Thessalon and district learned with sincere regret of the passing on another of Algoma's pioneers in the death of Mrs. Robert Nelles which occurred at her home after an illness of several weeks. Mrs. Nelles had been a patient at the Red Cross Hospital for some time, later returning to her home. She was improving in health when she passed away quietly in her sleep Wednesday May 18. She was in her 83rd year. The deceased, whose maiden name was Zina Johns, was born at Wingham, Ontario, the daughter of Fred and Elizabeth Johns. As a young girl she came to Algoma with her parents and they settled on a farm at Ansonia. She was united in marriage to Mathew Brandon and the couple resided at Ansonia for several years before coming to Thessalon, in 1918 where Mr. Brandon predeceased her in Oct 1942. In 1947 she was married to Robert Nelles. Mrs. Nelles was well known and highly respected throughout the district. She was beloved by her neighbors and friends, and will long be remembered for her kind and cheerful manner and many acts of kindness and love. Alert, both, mentally and physically, Mrs. Nelles clearly recalled innumerable highlights of pioneer days in Algoma. The body rested at her late residence until Friday, May 20, when a private service was held for the immediate family, with Rev. H. A. Dickinson in charge. At 2:30 a public service was held at Zion United Church. Favorite hymns were sung, and Mrs. Mac Clark beautifully rendered a solo,.''''Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." Interment was in Maple Ridge cemetery. She is survived by her husband, three daughters, Millie, (Mrs. Stirling Proud), Lily (Mrs. James Jack), and Vera, (Mrs. Jack Powell) and two sons Bill (Desbarats) and Ezra (Sudbury). | 4896 | Obituary - OWEN SOUND SUN - 24 Dec 1912 MR. BEN ALLEN PASSES AWAY UNEXPECTEDLY One of Owen Sound's Most Prominent Men Died Last Evening at G. & M. Hospital The news of the sudden death last evening about nine o'clock of Mr. Benjamin Allen in the General and Marine Hospital, came as a shock to his many friends throughout Owen Sound and vicinity. Up to a week ago Saturday Mr. Allen was in his usual good health, but feeling somewhat indisposed on Sunday he was advised to go to the hospital. Throughout the week his condition was not considered serious and at 8.45 last evening he was bright, and conversed freely with his daughter who had come to see him, telling her to go home and not to stay out too late. The end came shortly after she had gone, failure of the heart being the immediate cause of death. The late Mr. Ben Allen was born in the county of Tipperary*, Ireland [NOTE: He was born in Theur, County Sligo] in Sept, 1830 and spent his boyhood there. When still a young man he came ta Canada and settled in Weston, Ontario. The discovery of gold in Australia, led Mr. Allen to venture to that land of promise and together with a friend, set out for the gold fields. Coming hack to Canada, Mr. Allen again went to Weston* [Artesmia Twp, Grey Co] and later moved to Owen Sound in, 1857. He went into a mercantile business on Union Street and later was a member of the firm of Allen and Scully in the Parker block on Poulette St. He retired from business some years ago and for several years has been Clerk of the Division Court. Mr. Allen was for three or four years a member of the town council and for one term represented North Grey as Liberal member In the House of Commons. He took an active part in bringing the G. T. R. [Grand Trunk Railway] in here and the station, Ben Allen, was named in his honor. He was also interested in the Meaford railway proposition and was secretary of the Simcoe, Grey and Bruce Railway Company. Mr. Allen was an active worker in the Methodist Church, especially in Sunday School work and for about twenty years was Superintendent of Scrope St. Methodist Sunday School. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees. Besides his widow, he is survived by two sons, Will, of Rochester and James of Toronto, and one daughter, Miss Kate, of New York. | 4897 | Obituary - Paisley Advocate 1941 The remains of Margaret Cheves, wife of Dr A. H. Allen, who passed away in the Western Hospital at Toronto, on Wednesday morning last were brought to Paisley on Friday for interment in Stark Vale Cemetery. The burial service at the graveside was conducted by Rev G B Maxwell of Knox United Church, of which congregation Mrs Allen had been one of the most active members during her residence of upwards of twenty years here. The pallbearers were Messrs I Shoemaker, J McMillan, J H Steele, D McKenzie, S F Ballachey and J S Dewar. Many floral pieces adorned the casket, tributes from old friends. Mrs Allen was born October 13th, 1866 at Lakelet, between Fordwich and Clifford. While she was quite young, the family moved to Clifford, where Mrs Allen completed her public school course, thereafter attending the Harriston High School. She obtained her second class certificate and passed the Model School course at Mount Forest. After attending Ladies College, she taught school for a year near Clifford prior to her marriage to Dr Allen, who had established a dental practice here, and she came to Paisley as a bride. During her life, Mrs Allen's principal interests were her family and her church with an especial concern in missions. After leaving Paisley and going to Peterborough, both Mrs Allen and her husband retained their interest in the church and young people, and it was there she was presented with a life membership in the W. M. S. The remains were accompanied to Paisley by Dr Allen, their one son, Norman of Peterborough, and the youngest daughter (Grace), Mrs H Hyatt of Montreal. Spencer, Former Pres, of Local GOP Club, Dies Herbert Lee Spencer, who formally resided for many years on Ashbourne Drive, died January 19, 1971 at his home in Pasadena. A native of Canton, Ohio, Mr. Spencer is survived by his wife, Veronica Deming Spencer; two sons, William Churchill Spencer of Rhododendron, Oregon; and Robert Deming Spencer of Los Angeles; a daughter, Elizabeth Spencer Pfau, of San Francisco; and ten grandchildren. Funeral services were private. Mr. Spencer, a former president of tiie South Pasadena Republican Club, was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, where he was captain of the Navy football team. He was also coauthor of the original words of "Anchors Aweigh which was dedicated to his class. After graduation he served two world tours with the Great White Fleet. While still in the Navy, Mr. Spencer served at the White House as Presidential Aide to both William Howard Taft and Woodrow Wilson. Mrs. Taylor was bom at Carleton Place. Ontario on April 12th, 1895, to William and Maritta Dezell. She married William Milford Taylor in 1918 at her family farm home near Carleton Place, following which, she moved to her new husband's homestead in the Buffalo Basin School District. This became part of the Beechy Distnet. Here she lived for 58 years. During the past 14 years she lived with her daughter, Evelyn, in Lucky Lake. Mrs. Taylor was active in the caring concern amongst neighbors in those early days and was a friend to all in her community. She was a member of the Buffalo Basin Homemakers Club for many years and was honoured with a life membership. She always enjoyed her family and particularly family gatherings in the latter years. The family remember her as always busy in her home trying to make life more comfortable and cheerful for everyone. She spent many hours making quilts and other needlework, many of which were prize winners at the local agricultural fair, and all of which are greatly prized by her family. She was predeceased by her husband. Milford, in 1976; her son Kenneth in 1988; her mother and father; five brothers, Seeley, Melvin, William, Oliver and her twin Milton; three sisters, Alvina, Maggie and Bessie; and one granddaughter, Maria Eyoltson. She was also predeceased by one son-in-law, Roy Warren and one daughter-in-law, Delsie Taylor. She is survived by her sons, Stanley, Bordon and Keith (Eleanor) all of Beechy and four daughters, Helen (Dudley) Golden of Swift Current, Evelyn Taylor ot Lucky Lake, Maretta (Magnus) Eyolfson of Calgary and Ruth Taylor ot Swift Current; 16 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Hazel Gardiner of Carleton Place, Ontario. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, September 1st, 1990 at 2:00 p.m. at the Beechy United Church, Beechy, Sask., with Rev. Daryl Woods officiating. The interment will be in the Lance Valley Cemetery. Donations to the Beechy United Church or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
